Mystert Monday - The Creaking Sound in the Night

Katherine woke up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat from a terrible nightmare. As she gathered her thoughts, she hears a strange noise. Creeeaaaakkk! She thought it was her cat, white powder. So she turns to lay back down on her side, and noticed white powder was is in her room sleeping a comfy, pink arm chair. Creeeaaaakkk! The noise went again. Katherine became a bit worry considering she was home alone. She builds up some courage on the inside and decided to investigate this creaking noise.

Katherine slowly gets out of her bed, grabs her robe, tiptoes toward her door. Before she opens the door, she tries to search around her room in the dark for a weapon of some sort. Then Katherine remembered she had a "just in case" baseball bat. So "just in case" someone ever broke into her home, while she is there, she would crack the criminal over his head with the bat.

With the bat in her right hand, Katherine cracks her bedroom door open ever so slightly to peek downstairs. All of a sudden she hears a thump, bump, and thump. Katherine closes her room door. Katherine could have easily call the police, but her phone line was not working and the telephone guy was not scheduled to repair it until the next morning. As for her cell, due to the fact that she lives deep in the country, she does not get any service.

Knowing that the odds were against her, Katherine began to panic. She begins to hear footsteps coming slowly up the stairs. Katherine thought, "Oh, God! What am I going to do!" She stood behind her bedroom door grasping the baseball bat as tightly as she could. Katherine hears the footsteps approaching her bedroom door. The footsteps stop and her bedroom doorknob begins to turn slowly. Tears stream down her face. She holds the bat ready to swing. Katherine refused to go out without a fight. As the door opens, Katherine raises the bat into a batting postion. The perpetrator with a black trench coat and black shoes enters the room. In process of her swinging the bat at the culprit's head, she screams very loud as if to muster up the strength and courage to swing that bat one good time. Sadly to say, the perpetrator was too quick for Katherine's bat. He was able to catch the bat in his right hand and hold Katherine against the wall with his left.

He was too strong for her. With her eyes closed, Katherine screamed from the top of her lungs for help. But while she was screaming, she recognizes a familiar voice.

"Katherine, it's me. Calm down, honey." She opened her eyes. It was her husband, Stephen. When she realized it was her loving husband, Stephen, she started hitting and pushing him.

"You scared the living daylights out of me. You weren't due back home until tomorrow night."
"I know, honey. I wanted to surprise you. I thought I sneak in here without waking you up." Stephen laughed.

"It's not funny," Katherine said in a wimpering voice. Nevertheless, Katherine gave her husband one last shove. Then a hug. She was relieved to know it was him lurking around their home verses some deranged and dangerous burglar. Stephen told Katherine that he was sorry and that he loves her very much. He wrapped his arms around her very tightly and reassured Katherine that he will never let anyone or anything hurt her.

THE END

I hope you enjoy this story from the mind of yours truly. There's nothing like a somewhat mystery/suspense story with a happy ending.
